Milan.- Authorities in the city of Bologna, in northern Italy, banned a pro-Palestinian demonstration scheduled for Tuesday, citing the risk of disturbances, following days of protests and clashes with police across Italy, said a local representative of the Interior Minister.
The Giovani Palestinesi (Palestinian Youth) group Italy had scheduled demonstrations in the cities of Bologna and Turin to commemorate the second anniversary of a Hamas militant attack in Israel that killed 1,200 people.
"The demonstration will be absolutely forbidden," Enrico Ricci, the local prefect of Bologna, told reporters, as local authorities fear possible clashes after violence erupted in Rome over the weekend.
Giovani Palestinesi confirmed on Instagram that they plan to try to go ahead with a meeting despite the ban.
Israel's ambassador to Italy, Jonathan Peled, protested against initiatives "that seek to glorify the October 7 massacre and worked successfully with the Italian authorities to cancel the event," Israel's Foreign Ministry said on X.

Hundreds of thousands of people marched through the center of Rome on Saturday on the fourth consecutive day of protests in Italy since Israel intercepted an international flotilla attempting to deliver aid to Gaza and detained its activists. The Jewish community of Milan has opted for a discreet commemoration of the anniversary of the Hamas attack. "We will be in a city square, protected by law enforcement. We will gather, but for public order reasons, the police have forbidden us from announcing the location," declared Davide Romano, director of the Museum of the Jewish Brigades, to the newspaper La Repubblica.By Reuters
