Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced on Tuesday the imposition of a nighttime curfew in the city center, in response to a growing wave of demonstrations that have shaken the second largest metropolis in the United States.
The protests, which have intensified in recent days, arose in reaction to the immigration raids ordered by then-President Donald Trump, which have generated a strong response from both the immigrant community and human rights activists.
"Faced with the acts of vandalism and looting that have occurred in the heart of our city, I have made the decision to declare a local state of emergency and establish a curfew in downtown Los Angeles," explained Mayor Bass during a press conference.
He added that this measure seeks to restore public order and protect both peaceful protesters and residents and merchants affected by the disturbances.
