Washington.- The death of Cuban migrant Geraldo Lunas Campos, which occurred on January 3 while in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in a detention center in Texas, could be classified as homicide, according to an employee of the El Paso County Medical Examiner's Office who spoke to The Washington Post.
In a recording that the deceased's daughter gave to The Washington Post, a doctor explained that Lunas Campos had died of asphyxiation due to pressure on his neck and chest, leading to the consideration that it was a homicide pending the conclusion of the medical report. You may be interested in: http://EEUU identifica al migrante acusado de chocar contra vehículos de ICE en Texas
ICE initially reported that its staff observed the detainee "distressed" and that he was attended to by emergency medical services, who were unable to save his life, without detailing the cause of death. The agency later explained that Lunas Campos had been moved to a segregated housing unit after exhibiting disruptive behavior, but did not offer further details about the use of force. The death of Lunas Campos occurs in a context of increasing deaths in immigration custody in the United States, amid the hardening of President Donald Trump's immigration policy. According to official data, at least 30 people died in ICE detention centers in 2025, the highest figure in two decades, and four have died in the first nine days of 2026.
