Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a sentence of 27 years in prison for coupism, remains stable after being hospitalized for bacterial bronchopneumonia, although his kidney function and inflammatory markers have shown deterioration, according to the medical report released by the DF Star hospital in Brasilia.
According to the bulletin, the leader of the Brazilian far-right is "clinically stable, but presented a worsening in his kidney function and a rise in inflammatory markers". Hospital professionals added that Bolsonaro remains in an intensive care unit and there is still no date scheduled for his medical discharge.

The lung infection is currently treated with antibiotics, intravenous hydration and sessions of physiotherapy respiratory and motor. In addition, preventive measures were implemented against a possible venous thrombosis. Bolsonaro was taken to the hospital on Friday after suffering a condition described as "serious", with fever, very intense chills, vomiting and breathing difficulties in the cell where he has been held since January in the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, in the Brazilian capital. The bronchopneumonia was caused by a bacteria present in both lungs, with a predominance in the left, probably as a result of bronchoaspiration, that is, the accidental entry of digestive fluids into the respiratory tract. Since last November, Bolsonaro has been serving a sentence for "leading" a coup plot with the aim of "perpetuating himself in power," after being defeated by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the 2022 elections, according to the ruling of the Supreme Court. During his confinement, both in a police station and in the penitentiary center, he has required hospitalization on several occasions for problems such as hiccups, vomiting and dizziness, all attributed to complications derived from the abdominal wounds suffered in the 2018 knife attack, during the presidential campaign. Since that episode, Bolsonaro has undergone various hospitalizations and medical procedures due to the after-effects of the attack.This is the first time he has been hospitalized since he began his sentence on January 15 at the Papuda Penitentiary Complex. His previous admission was during his stay in a special cell at the headquarters of the Federal Police in Brasilia, when he underwent four surgeries and remained hospitalized between December 24, 2025 and January 1 of this year.
Family members and lawyers of the former president took advantage of the new hospitalization to once again claim before the Supreme Court the benefit of house arrest for humanitarian reasons, a request that the court has so far rejected. "They are playing with my father's life. They can't stick to this position that it's some kind of fuss or the paranoia that he can escape," expressed Flávio Bolsonaro, senator and eldest son of the former president, considered the main rival of Lula in the upcoming presidential elections in October.
