Opposition PRI party leader assassinated in the violent Mexican state of Guerrero

Mexico City.- The leader of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the Costa Chica region, in the Mexican state of Guerrero, Claudia Ivett Rodríguez, died after an armed attack, confirmed this Thursday the coordinator of the party in the Senate, Manuel Añorve, and the state steering committee of the PRI. Through his social media, the politician condemned the "cowardly murder" of his colleague and expressed his solidarity with her family and friends following the tragic event.

"We demand a thorough investigation by the authorities and immediate results. This crime cannot go unpunished. We demand justice!", he said in a post on X. The local PRI leader, who was also a commissioner in the community of Milpillas, was murdered in an armed attack on Wednesday night, while she was working in her neighborhood store, according to local media reports. According to initial reports, several individuals arrived at the establishment and fired shots at the police before fleeing the scene. For the moment, the authorities have not commented on this murder, although officials from the state Prosecutor's Office went to the scene of the crime to carry out the removal of the body and begin the investigation, according to local media. The identity of the perpetrators and the motive for the crime have not been revealed either. Guerrero is one of the most violent states in Mexico and concentrates a high number of homicides, in a context in which the federal government assures that murders have fallen by 44% in the first 17 months of Claudia Sheinbaum's presidency.
