Lima, Peru.- The interim president of Peru, José Jerí, met this Sunday with the heads of the electoral bodies of his country, with the aim of guaranteeing "a transparent and efficient electoral process" towards the general elections called for April 12 of next year.
The president received the heads of the National Elections Jury (JNE), Roberto Burneo; of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Piero Covetto; and of the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec), Carmen Velarde, at the Government Palace in Lima. "During the meeting, the necessary measures and requirements were established to guarantee an orderly transition and a transparent and efficient electoral process, heading towards the general elections of 2026," stated the Peruvian Presidency. The heads of the electoral bodies went to the presidential headquarters after being summoned last Wednesday by Jerí, after receiving a request for the authorities to take the necessary measures to ensure a protected environment in the run-up to the elections. You can read: Ecuador seeks to strengthen the fight against drug trafficking and intelligence systems with the OAS
"For the 2026 elections to be safe and guarantee free citizen expression, it is important to dialogue with the heads of the JNE, ONPE, and Reniec. Therefore, he summoned them to the Government Palace this Sunday," said the president, who ten days ago replaced Dina Boluarte in office, who was removed by Congress with the argument of having demonstrated a "permanent moral incapacity" to face the crisis of citizen insecurity in her country. At the end of Sunday's meeting, Burneo stated that issues related to the organization of the elections were discussed, specifically regarding the budget needed to meet that goal, as well as aspects related to security for the organization of the electoral process. "We have found a predisposition for these resources to be guaranteed," said the official before pointing out that they seek to receive economic support, but also "logistical support in security matters." Burneo remarked that the electoral schedule "must be respected at all times", as he considered that the elections "are going to be very complex in 2026". "I want to emphasize that the electoral schedule will not be affected by the situation, on April 12, the next elections will be held normally", ratified the representative of the JNE, before ratifying that "the electoral schedule is inexorable". The general elections in Peru are to be held on April 12, 2026, to elect a new president and two vice presidents, 130 deputies and 60 senators, who will make up the new bicameral Congress, and five representatives to the Andean Parliament, all for the period 2026-2031.
