The X Summit of the Americas will be held on December 4th and 5th in Punta Cana. The Dominican government announced on September 30th its decision not to invite Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela in order to favor "the largest convocation and ensure the development of the forum (...) in the face of the current context of political polarization". These three countries "for various reasons, have decided not to be part" of the OAS and "also did not participate in the last edition of the Summit of the Americas", recalled the Dominican Foreign Ministry in its statement of last September 30. Nicaragua definitively left the OAS in November 2023, two years after President Daniel Ortega activated the process to leave the organization due to the organization's rejection of the elections in which he was re-elected. Cuba was expelled in 1962, while Venezuela's membership remains in dispute, given that Nicolás Maduro initiated in 2017 the process to leave the organization, but the OAS stopped recognizing his Government. Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, and her Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, announced that they will not attend the Summit due to the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela from the meeting.
