Vladimir Putin today praised the “energetic and sincere” efforts of the United States to end the fighting in Ukraine, on the eve of the summit in Alaska with his American counterpart,
Donald Trump.
The U.S. “is, in my view, making very energetic and sincere efforts to end military actions and the crisis” in Ukraine, Putin said at the beginning of an extraordinary meeting with the top officials of the government and the Kremlin.
Putin stressed that these efforts are also aimed “at reaching an agreement that meets the interests of all parties involved in this conflict”.
“And to create the long-term conditions for peace between our countries and in Europe and the world, together, if in the next stage we reach an agreement on the control of offensive strategic weapons,” he added, alluding to the last nuclear disarmament treaty between Russia and the US, START III, which expires in 2026.
Putin stressed that the meeting with the country’s highest officials was to inform them about “how the negotiation process on the Ukrainian crisis is going and how the bilateral negotiations with the Ukrainian delegation are going.”
In the images, the Foreign, Defense, and Finance ministers could be seen, who will attend the summit tomorrow, Friday, in Alaska, in addition to the Chief of the General Staff of the Army, Valery Gerasimov.
According to reports this morning from the Kremlin, Putin and Trump will begin their summit at 11:30 local time (19:30 GMT) on Friday at a military base in Alaska.
“Obviously, the central theme will be the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis,” said Yuri Ushakov, Kremlin advisor on international policy, in a telephone press conference.
First, there will be a “face-to-face” meeting between both leaders, who will later be joined by delegations made up of five senior officials, which will include a “working breakfast”.
As the White House had already announced, the meeting will take place at the Elmendorf-Richardson military base, near the Alaskan capital, Anchorage.
At the end of the conversations, he specified, there will be a joint press conference, after which the Russian delegation will leave US territory “immediately”.
According to the Russian and international press, Putin and Trump will address tomorrow, Friday, the entire spectrum of issues related to the peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, from the territorial question to a possible ceasefire, whether it be only aerial or total.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Kyiv will not accept any proposal that is not agreed upon with Ukraine, a matter in which he has received the full support this week of the main European leaders.
