Right-wing Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay is shot.

Bogotá.- Colombian politician Miguel Uribe Turbay, one of the presidential candidates for the Uribista Democratic Center party, was shot this Saturday in an attack during a campaign event in Bogotá, local media reported.

The attack was carried out in the Modelia neighborhood, located in the west of Bogotá, and the politician was urgently transferred to a hospital. 

According to the first versions, Uribe Turbay received six bullet wounds and was taken to the Clínica Colombia by his collaborators, who in videos released on social media, are seen carrying him amidst tears.

The first versions indicate that two individuals who apparently participated in the attack were arrested shortly after by the Police with the help of the community.

Uribe Turbay is a politician close to former President Álvaro Uribe and one of the most severe critics of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, especially for the deterioration of security in the country.

Miguel Uribe Turbay is the son of Diana Turbay, a journalist who was kidnapped and murdered in 1991 by drug traffickers in the service of Pablo Escobar, and grandson of former President Julio César Turbay, who governed the country between 1978 and 1982.

One of the first people to condemn the attack was the Colombian chancellor, Laura Sarabia.

“Violence can never be the way. I strongly condemn the attack against Miguel Uribe. I sincerely hope he is well and out of danger. Nothing justifies the use of violence in a society that seeks to build in peace,” expressed the chancellor on her X account. Uribe Turbay was a Bogotá councilman between 2012 and 2015, as well as Secretary of Government in the Mayor’s Office of Enrique Peñalosa and since 2022 holds a seat in the Senate for the Democratic Center.
