Brussels.- Spain is the fourth country in the European Union with the highest proportion of female scientists and engineers (47.6%), above the community average (40.5%) and surpassed only by Latvia (50.9%), Denmark (48.8%) and Estonia (47.9%), reported today the community statistics office, Eurostat, coinciding with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Furthermore, in 2024, women accounted for more than half in those technical careers in four Spanish regions: Canary Islands (58.8%), Central (52.5%) Northwest (52.4%) and South (50.3%), according to Eurostat's geographical classification, which also identifies more than 50% women in those professions in some regions of Portugal, Poland, Bulgaria, Sweden and Latvia.You may be interested in: 27 Latin American women forced into prostitution in Spain are released
At the tail end of the Twenty-Seven are Finland (30.7%), Hungary (31.7%), Luxembourg (32.4%), Slovakia (33.6%) and Germany (34.6%). The number of women working as scientists and engineers in the EU has been increasing, from 3.4 million in 2008 to 5.2 million in 2014 and 7.9 million in 2024. «Women and girls in science and technology mean better societies. In Europe we know this and we are proud of the improvements made over the years. But there is still much to do. Let's fight against any setbacks.
