The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, asserted this Monday that the signing of the ceasefire agreement on Gaza ratified this Monday during a peace summit in Egypt is an "achievement" of the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
"President Trump, this is your achievement. I thank you for your tireless effort to make this moment a reality," wrote the head of the British government on the social network X after the event in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh, which was attended by about twenty leaders.
"The UK is ready to support the full implementation of the peace plan," he added.
Starmer accompanied the publication with a photograph of the meeting in which he is seen conversing with Trump in front of several of the attending leaders, including, among others, the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, or the French President, Emmanuel Macron.

According to statements collected by British media, Starmer called this October 13th a "historic day" and reiterated that, after the ceasefire and the return of all Israeli hostages, the important thing now is to determine what role each country will play in the next phase of the peace negotiations. "The UK in particular I think can have a role in monitoring the ceasefire, but also in dismantling Hamas's capacity and its weaponry, based on our experience in Northern Ireland," he pointed out. "So the question today has become: How do we implement it? How do we ensure we move forward? It's important that we stay focused, we can't afford any setbacks now," he added. At a personal level, Starmer admitted that he had not asked to have a seat on the transitional 'Peace Board' for Gaza and commented that "others should decide" whether former British Prime Minister Tony Blair should be involved in this body. On the sidelines of the peace summit in Egypt, Starmer held meetings with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, to "closely coordinate" the implementation of the next phase of the peace plan for Gaza, according to Downing Street.
