Bangkok.- At least 26 people have died, 22 remain
missing and more than a hundred have been injured in Vietnam by the impact of Typhoon Bualoi, the deadliest storm to hit the country so far this year, according to local authorities on Tuesday.
The Department of Natural Disaster Prevention of the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture specified that thunderstorms and floods caused the majority of victims, while others perished from falling trees.
In the northern province of Ninh Binh, where the typhoon caused a tornado that destroyed a dozen houses, 11 people died, according to the official Vietnam News Agency (VNA).
Bualoi, which reached Vietnamese territory on Monday around 5:00 local time (22:00 GMT on Sunday) with winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, left more precipitation today, pointed out the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting of Vietnam.
"The rains are likely to cause floods and landslides," the agency warned in a statement.
The government ordered the mobilization of military personnel the day before to focus on the emergency response and repair tasks.
Before the typhoon's arrival, Vietnamese authorities rushed on Sunday to issue evacuation orders for nearly 250,000 people, most of them from the port city of Da Nang, in the center of the country.
After crossing Laos the day before, the storm now reaches northeastern Burma (Myanmar), where it is expected to dissipate this Tuesday.
Last week, Bualoi left at least 14 dead in its wake in the Philippines.
Typhoons are recurring phenomena in Southeast Asia, when the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean favor the formation of cyclones.
Typhoon Kajiki caused the deaths of seven people and left 34 injured in Vietnam at the end of last August, where the authorities of the city of Hanoi evacuated half a million inhabitants.
The country was also severely hit in September of last year by Typhoon Yagi, which left more than 300 dead due to rains and landslides.
