Leo XVI lamented that “unfortunately, we feel powerless in the face of the expansion of violence in the world” but urged not to resign ourselves “to the logic of conflict and weapons prevailing”, during the Angelus prayer this Friday in Freedom Square in Castel Gandolfo, where he is on vacation.
The pontiff celebrated Mass this Friday in the parish of the pontifical palace on the occasion of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary and then the Angelus before nearly 2,500 people who gathered in this town on the outskirts of Rome, a summer resort for years for the popes, although Francis interrupted this tradition.
Lelón XIV prayed that Mary’s example would convince “someday of the value of human life, and that human lives are never wasted again, unleashing wars”.
“Unfortunately, we feel powerless in the face of the expansion of violence in the world, increasingly deaf and insensitive to every human impulse. However, we must not lose hope. God is greater than sin,” he added.
And he continued: “We must not resign ourselves to the prevalence of the logic of conflict and weapons. We believe that the Lord continues to help his children, remembering his Mercy, which was only poured out. It is possible to rediscover the path of peace.”
The Pope arrived this Wednesday in Castel Gandolfo, on the outskirts of Rome, for a few days of vacation until August 19 and to take refuge in the town where he already stayed in July from the extreme heat of the capital and to celebrate some events in the area such as a lunch with a hundred disadvantaged people.
After having spent 16 days in July, he returned to Villa Barberini, another building belonging to the Vatican, as the apostolic palace became a museum during the pontificate of Francis, who never went on vacation to this town.
In this period, he also plans a Sunday mass at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rotonda, after which he will return for the Angelus prayer in Castel Gandolfo and then in the Laudato Si’ borough, located in the gardens of the pontifical palace of Castel Gandolfo, he will have lunch with a hundred people in need from the diocese of Albano.
