Antonelli takes pole in Suzuka; Sainz and Alonso will start from the back in Japan
SUZUKA, Japan. — Young Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli will start from the first position this Sunday at the Japanese Grand Prix, the third race of the Formula 1 World Championship, after dominating the qualifying session at the Suzuka circuit.
The Mercedes driver, just 19 years old, signed his second pole position of the season by setting the best time in Q3, surpassing his teammate, the British George Russell, current leader of the championship, who will start alongside him on the front row.
From the second row will start the Australian Oscar Piastri, from McLaren, and the Monegasque Charles Leclerc, from Ferrari, who also showed a competitive pace during qualifying.
Regarding the Spanish drivers, Carlos Sainz will start from sixteenth position with Williams, while veteran Fernando Alonso, from Aston Martin, will start from the twenty-first and last position on the grid.
Antonelli, recently winner in China, highlighted the difficulty of the qualifying due to problems with the overheating of the tires, although he assured that the pace of the single-seater was enough to take the pole in one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar.
For his part, Alonso acknowledged that the start of the season has been complicated and that the first races of the year will be difficult for Aston Martin, a team that has not yet managed to find the expected performance in the single-seater.
The Japanese Grand Prix race will be held this Sunday at the historic Suzuka circuit, one of the most technical and demanding tracks in the Formula 1 world championship.
