In Dominican political history, gestures of national unity have been as scarce as they are valuable. Therefore, the meeting held this Wednesday between President Luis Abinader and former presidents Leonel Fernández, Hipólito Mejía, and Danilo Medina at the Ministry of Defense marks a historic moment in the country, not only because of its unprecedented nature, but also because of what it represents in terms of institutional maturity, vision of the State, and patriotic sense.
Faced with the prolonged illegal Haitian migration and the alarming crisis in the neighboring country, which has been exacerbated by its uncontrollable gangs, the Dominican Republic has taken a decisive step by drawing a strong line between the current government and its predecessors. And it is that what is at stake is not an electoral issue nor a partisan difference, but national security, economic stability and the governability of our nation.
For the first time, a State policy towards Haiti is outlined, built not from improvisation or urgency, but from consensus and strategic analysis.
From our perspective, what has occurred is more than a symbolic photo that will go down in the pages of our history; it is a message to the international community that the Dominican Republic acts with one voice when it comes to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The one who capitalizes politically on this movement the most is, without a doubt, President Abinader by convening three leaders with such dissimilar histories, interests, and trajectories, and achieving a unified commitment from them, which requires leadership, vision, and maturity. For in the current situation, it is not just about governing, but about knowing how to lead a nation in the face of complex challenges.
That unprecedented gesture reinforces his image as a statesman and consolidates his position both internally and internationally.
But former presidents also come out well, as they have assumed the role that corresponds to them in a good democracy, to be consultative figures, with accumulated experience and historical responsibility.
With this action, they shake off the dust of partisan trenches and place themselves on the higher ground of national interests. And that, in an era where political calculation abounds and commitment is scarce, deserves to be recognized.
