Alexander Ogando dominates his heat and advances to the semifinals in the 200 meters at the Tokyo World Championships

Tokyo.– Dominican sprinter Alexander Ogando once again demonstrated his high competitive level this Wednesday at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, by winning with authority in his qualifying heat of the 200 meters flat, with a time of 20.10 seconds, which secured him a direct pass to the semifinals.

The test was held at 7:15 in the morning (local time) in Tokyo, where Ogando started with a reaction of 0.146 seconds, leading the race from start to finish and recording the best time in his group. In the same series, South African Wayde Van Niekerk finished in second place with 20.19 seconds, while Swiss Timothé Mumenthaler took third place with 20.39 seconds.
With this performance, Ogando confirms his status as a medal contender in the distance, adding another significant result to his record, following recent podium finishes in the Diamond League. In contrast, the also Dominican sprinter Liranyi Alonzo could not complete her participation in the women's 200 meters, after presenting physical discomfort that forced her to abandon the preliminary race. Dominican athletics keeps its hopes alive for new classifications and medals in Tokyo, with Ogando as one of the main figures in the final stretch of the world championship.
