LIDOM will dedicate the 2025-2026 Championship to Juan Marichal

Santo Domingo. — The Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) announced this Thursday that the next Autumn-Winter Baseball Championship 2025-2026 will be dedicated to Cooperstown Hall of Fame member Juan Marichal, in recognition of his extraordinary career and his invaluable contribution to national and international baseball.

The decision was unanimously approved by the LIDOM Board of Directors, headed by its president Vitelio Mejía Ortiz, which reflects the consensus and high regard that Dominican baseball gives to the figure of the legendary pitcher. Known worldwide as the “Monster of Laguna Verde”, Juan Antonio Marichal Sánchez is considered the best Dominican pitcher of all time and one of the greatest in the history of Major League Baseball. Born in Monte Cristi in 1937, he debuted in 1960 with the San Francisco Giants, a team with which he became a symbol of excellence and consistency. During his Major League career, Marichal accumulated 243 victories, 2,303 strikeouts and an earned run average of 2.89, as well as being selected nine times to the All-Star Game and leading the league in wins in 1963 and 1968. In 1983, he made history by becoming the first Dominican player to enter the Cooperstown Hall of Fame, paving the way for future generations. In winter ball, Marichal left an indelible mark with the Leones del Escogido, recording 36 wins, 22 losses, an ERA of 1.87 and 338 strikeouts in 533 innings, contributing to multiple club championships and solidifying his legend in Dominican baseball.

This championship will be dedicated to him as a sign of gratitude for his legacy and for inspiring entire generations of baseball players”.
