“I feel he is ready for this and it's his turn”, Boone assured when explaining the decision to give the ball to Gil. “We decided to keep Warren as an alternative in the bullpen and we trust that Luis is prepared”. For Gil, who will be making his third postseason start, the challenge has a special meaning: "This is a very important game for us. I'm going to go out there and compete, give 100% and help the team as much as I can," said the Dominican pitcher. The New York rotation plan was defined as follows:- Game 1: Luis Gil
- Game 2 (Sunday): Max Fried
- Game 3 (Tuesday): Carlos Rodón
- Game 4 (Wednesday, if necessary): Cam Schlittler
Although his secondary metrics showed some decline –his average velocity decreased by one mile compared to the previous year and his strikeout rate fell from 26.8% to 16.8% –, the Yankees won eight of their eleven starts, including a dominant six-inning, one-run performance against the Blue Jays themselves on September 6th.
Boone highlighted the competitive nature of his starter: "He has worked hard to come back. It hasn't always been pretty, but the most important thing is that it has yielded results. He is not afraid and we know what he is capable of when he is on the mound."
