UNITED STATES – The closing of Group B of the World Baseball Classic presents multiple classification scenarios, depending on the result of the last game between Mexico and Italy. Currently, the United States, Mexico, and Italy have chances to advance, and everything will be defined by the final score and the tie-breaking criteria established by the tournament rules.

If Italy achieves victory against Mexico, the scenario is simple: Italy and the United States would secure their place in the Quarter-Finals, occupying the first and second place of the group respectively. However, if Mexico achieves victory, the group would be left with a three-way tie with a 3-1 record between Mexico, the United States, and Italy. Because none of the teams would have won the head-to-head series against the other two, the second tie-breaking criterion of the regulations would be applied, which is calculated by dividing the runs allowed by the defensive outs in the games played between the tied teams.

So far, the numbers in that criterion are as follows:

  • Mexico: 5 runs allowed / 24 outs = 0.208
  • United States: 11 runs allowed / 54 outs = 0.204
  • Italy: 6 runs allowed / 27 outs = 0.222
Based on that scenario, the combinations would be defined as follows:

If Italy beats Mexico

  • They classify: Italy (B1) and United States (B2).

If Mexico wins scoring 5 runs or more

  • They classify: Mexico (B1) and United States (B2).

If Mexico wins scoring 4 runs or less

  • They classify: Mexico (B1) and Italy (B2).
This way, the last game of the group will not only define the winner of the match, but also the final classification order and the teams that will continue their path towards the title of the World Baseball Classic.
