LOS ANGELES. The Los Angeles Dodgers announced this Friday that Shohei Ohtani will not make his scheduled start against the Diamondbacks due to persistent irritation in his left knee, an injury that will also force him to miss next week’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game in Philadelphia.

The Japanese player, who had been chosen as the starting designated hitter for the National League after leading the fan vote, will remain out of mound activity while receiving treatment for the ailment, which he has been dealing with since at least June 11. However, the club expects to keep him in the lineup as a designated hitter for the remainder of the weekend series.
Despite the physical setback, Ohtani continues to post another outstanding season. Offensively, he has a .290 batting average, a .405 on-base percentage, and a .534 slugging percentage, with 20 home runs and 56 runs batted in. As a pitcher, he exhibits an outstanding record with a 1.79 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, and 14 starts in which he has worked 85.2 innings.
The absence of the Japanese phenomenon represents a significant loss for the All-Star Game, just days after reaching the milestone of 300 career home runs in Major League Baseball.
