Ranger Suárez signs a record five-year contract for US$130 million with the Red Sox

BOSTON.– The Boston Red Sox reached an agreement for five seasons and 130 million dollars with the stellar Venezuelan left-handed pitcher Ranger Suárez, as confirmed by a source to MLB.com, in one of the most important moves of the free agent market heading into the 2026 season.

Suárez, 29, has established himself as one of baseball's most reliable starters since becoming a regular part of the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation in 2022, a season in which he was a key piece in leading the club to the World Series. Since then, the lefty has recorded an ERA of 3.59 in 104 starts, in addition to an outstanding postseason performance, with a 1.48 ERA in 11 appearances, eight of them as a starter.

Elite Performance in Key Moments

One of his most outstanding moments came in the 2025 postseason, when he limited the Los Angeles Dodgers to just one run in five innings during the National League Division Series. After the season, Philadelphia extended a qualifying offer for US$22.025 million for 2026, which was rejected by the pitcher. As a result of his signing with Boston, the Red Sox will have to forfeit a pick after the fourth round of the 2026 Draft.

Profile of Boston's New Ace

Suárez is recognized for his ability to pitch deep into games. In 2025 he averaged six innings per start, accumulating 157.1 innings in 26 starts. He is also one of the best pitchers at generating ground balls, which reduces the opponent's offensive damage. In advanced metrics, he ranked among the MLB elite in weak contact allowed, exit velocity, control, and expected effectiveness. His rivals barely hit .192 against the curve and .203 against his changeup, two of his most lethal pitches. The Venezuelan has a wide repertoire of six pitches: sinker, four-seam fastball, cutter, curveball, slider, and changeup, which makes him a difficult starter to decipher for hitters.

Key piece in the new rotation

Suárez will arrive in Boston to lead a rotation that already includes Garrett Crochet, Sonny Gray, Brayan Bello and Johan Oviedo, making the Red Sox one of the deepest pitching staffs in the American League.
