The Argentine leader, considered one of the most influential personalities in the development of basketball in his country, had been unanimously elected to lead the continental body in May 2023, after presiding for four years over the Argentine Basketball Confederation, a position he held since 2019. The Secretary General of FIBA, Andreas Zagklis, stated that the news has deeply shocked the basketball family in Argentina, in the Americas and around the world. He highlighted that Borro will be remembered for his vision of the sport as a tool for educational, social and cultural impact, as well as for his extensive knowledge of club basketball and his constant drive for innovative ideas for its development. In the same vein, FIBA Americas CEO, Carlos Alves, lamented the loss of a passionate leader who dedicated his life to the growth of basketball and who knew how to combine tradition and innovation in each project he led, while also conveying condolences to his family and friends. Borro was widely recognized for his commitment to sports. His career gained notoriety when he assumed the presidency of the club Obras Sanitarias in the year 2000. Later he held management positions in the Basketball Federation of the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires, the Association of Clubs —the organizing entity of the Argentine National League— and the Argentine Women's League, where he left a distinctive mark as a promoter of professionalism and institutional modernization. In 2019, he was also appointed by FIBA as a founding council member of the BCL Americas. Since the news was announced, federations, leagues, and sports organizations from across the continent and other regions have sent numerous messages of condolence and tributes in recognition of his legacy and contribution to basketball.
