Buenos Aires (EFE).- Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martínez, the starting goalkeeper for the Argentine national football team, cast doubt on his continuity under the posts for the Albiceleste following the defeat against Spain in the final of the 2026 World Cup, as he posted this Tuesday on social media.

“There is a lot to reflect on and see how to move forward and if it is time to step aside,” stated the 33-year-old goalkeeper in an Instagram post that included images of himself at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the final was played in which he could not stop Ferran Torres’ shot that gave the second world title to ‘La Roja’.
“I dreamed that we won it back, I dreamed of bringing it to Argentina and making history once again. The truth is that the pain is difficult to explain,” said Martínez, who saved eleven Spanish shots in Sunday’s match.
‘Dibu’, who cried inconsolably on the American pitch, added: “I am truly very sorry, I tried my best to help my country and my teammates.”
Heartfelt tribute to his teammates
Defender Nicolás Otamendi, who before the start of the World Cup had announced that it would be his last tournament in the sky-blue and white kit, published a heartfelt tribute to his teammates on his social media on Monday, saying of them: “You are my safe place when football gives me the greatest emotions and also the greatest sorrows.”
Nicolás Tagliafico, who had an outstanding performance during the World Cup and remained on the pitch against Spain despite suffering from obvious pain in his left leg, summarized his feelings about the defeat on Instagram on Monday: “It hurts a lot, I won’t deny it. But having reached another final and giving everything on the pitch cannot be erased by anything.”
