The National Football League (NFL) issued an official reminder this Friday to its 32 teams about the strict prohibition of making bets within the organization, after the scandal that shook the NBA this week, where several players and coaches were accused of participating in an illegal betting ring.

The pronouncement comes after the United States Department of Justice reported two federal indictments related to illegal betting conspiracies and rigged poker games, in which more than 30 people were involved, including well-known NBA figures such as Chauncey Billups, coach of the Portland Trail Blazers; Terry Rozier, player for the Miami Heat; and former player Damon Jones, who played with Heat, Bucks and Cavaliers."These events highlight the risks faced by all sports in the current environment and serve as a reminder of the need to strictly adhere to the NFL's Gambling Policy," the league noted in a statement sent to the teams.
Reminder of the rules
In its statement, the NFL was blunt in reminding that no player, coach, or employee can participate in sports or casino betting, either directly or indirectly.The league also warned that this type of action includes the use of websites or applications dedicated to betting, even in states where they are not legal."Players must be reminded that they are prohibited from participating in or facilitating any form of illegal gambling, whether in sports, casino games, or any other type," the text underlines.
The NFLPA also speaks out
The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) backed the measure and sent a similar message to the players of the 32 franchises, reminding them that the league monitors content in media and podcasts that may be linked to or sponsored by betting houses. “Please note that the NFL investigates any type of association with betting entities,” indicated the NFLPA.The NFL, which in recent years has faced its own cases of violations of the betting policy, seeks to prevent similar situations to those of the NBA from repeating themselves, reaffirming its commitment to the integrity of the sport and competitive transparency
