Santo Domingo.- The leader of the Gigantes del Cibao, José Leger, offered this Wednesday his impressions on the team's moment and the adjustments made for tonight's important game against the Tigres del Licey at the Quisqueya stadium, the first duel of a series of two consecutive matches against their direct rival in the standings.
Leger acknowledged that, although the 50-game season always demands consistency, the Giants have managed to "straighten the ship a little" after a complicated start. A positive streak of four victories had boosted the team before falling last night, in a game where, despite producing runs, they could not preserve them due to defensive failures that "extended innings and cost the game".
"We don't dwell on defeat. We turn the page. Today we start two key games here in Quisqueya against a team that's breathing down our necks," he expressed.
Sick with the flu and injury
The leader informed that Leury García and Carlos Peguero remain out of the roster due to a strong flu virus that has kept them resting since yesterday. In Peguero's case, his reincorporation is expected tomorrow.
Regarding Luis García, he explained that he woke up with his foot very swollen after being hit by a foul during the game against the Eagles. Although he traveled to be evaluated by the trainers, "which speaks of his commitment", it was finally decided to give him the whole day to reduce the swelling in the area.
Bullpen reinforcements: Jimmy Cordero and Fernando Abad
Leger was pleased with the arrival of relievers Jimmy Cordero and Fernando Abad, both from the Leones del Escogido.
"I know them quite well. Fernando is a proven pitcher in the league, with experience closing games. Jimmy also comes from closing with the Escogido. They are two nice pieces to have in the bullpen and they solidify it even more," he affirmed.
Although his recent statistics don't look dominant, Leger defended his actual ability.
"Numbers can be deceiving. One bad inning raises anyone's ERA. Both are throwing strikes, striking out batters, and have experience. We can use them in any situation."
Game plan against Licey
For today's game, Leger announced that Alberto Pacheco will open the game in an opener role, with limited participation before giving way to the bullpen, which has been key in the team's resurgence over the last two weeks.
The leader emphasized that, although each game is important, these matches against Licey, their direct rival in the fight for classification, receive special attention.
"We are ready for battle. We think about today, not tomorrow," he emphasized.
Gary Sánchez's situation
Regarding the status of star Gary Sánchez behind the plate, Leger indicated that he continues as a designated hitter due to a persistent discomfort in a finger that affects his catching.
"It's a work in progress. This week will continue as designated," he reported.
Team travel and logistics
Faced with long trips to Santo Domingo, Leger confirmed that the team will stay in the capital for the second consecutive game at Quisqueya.
Message to the fans and the team's focus
With the table tight and four teams fighting for two qualifying spots, Leger ensured that the group remains focused day by day.
"Nobody thinks about the future, but about today's game. The close victory we achieved in La Romana changed the team's mood. These guys fight every day and stick together. Hansel Alberto always offers positive messages after the games," he highlighted.
New stage in his career
Finally, referring to his recent appointment in the summer within organized baseball, Leger expressed pride and satisfaction: “It's an honor that they value the work one does. It's part of the growth and motivates me to continue giving my best.”
