During the meeting titled
“The Power of Believing”, held at the headquarters of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Biles shared her personal and professional experience, recalling the moment when she decided to withdraw from several events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to prioritize her emotional well-being.
"Mental health remains a major stigma in the world, particularly in the United States, because it is not talked about enough. It's time to stop seeing it as a weakness," said the 28-year-old gymnast.
From Tokyo to Paris: A Story of Resilience
Biles reported that, after suffering an anxiety attack and mental block in Tokyo, she needed emotional support, rest, and accompaniment to return to competition. That process culminated in her triumphant return at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she conquered three golds and a silver.
"I chose to be a human being before an icon. I want people to see that we can all struggle, even at the top," expressed the athlete, who has become an influential voice in the global conversation about mental health.
Inspiration and Equity
In the talk, Biles also addressed gender equality and the representation of black women in sports. She said that figures like
Gabby Douglas were her inspiration and that she now seeks to inspire new generations.
"We did it! We want more girls to see themselves reflected and believe they can achieve any goal," she said.
The Olympic champion also highlighted her commitment to social causes, such as the adoption system —of which she herself was a part— and her work as a mentor in the organization
Friends of the Children.
Present and Future
Currently, Biles is in a period of rest, although she does not rule out being present at the Olympic Games in
Los Angeles 2028, "either as a competitor or cheering from the stands."
During her visit to Buenos Aires, within the framework of the city's designation as
World Sports Capital 2027, Biles was received by Mayor
Jorge Macri and shared a moment with Uruguayan soccer player
Edinson Cavani. This Thursday, she will offer a gymnastics clinic alongside her coach at the Mary Terán de Weiss Stadium, aimed at local young talents.
