The recognition of Nadal comes at the proposal of the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sport of the UPM, which approved his investiture in March 2022. However, the tennis player himself requested to postpone the act until the conclusion of his sporting career.
With this appointment, the UPM seeks to pay tribute to Nadal's career and values, considered one of the most influential and admired athletes in the history of tennis, as well as a benchmark in effort, discipline and self-improvement.
The inauguration ceremony will be held in March 2026 and is expected to bring together prominent figures from the academic, sports, and institutional fields.
Rafael Nadal will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the Polytechnic University of Madrid in March
