Santo Domingo.- On a day like today, September 3, 1930, the city of Santo Domingo de Guzmán was devastated by the San Zenón hurricane, considered the greatest tragedy caused by a phenomenon of this type in the history of the Dominican Republic. More than two thousand people lost their lives and a large part of the capital was destroyed and desolate.
At that moment, President Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina had been in power for only 18 days, after being sworn in on August 16, 1930. The magnitude of the disaster and the recovery plan he implemented allowed him to consolidate politically and strengthen his position, which contributed to his re-election in 1934.
The San Zenón cyclone marked a milestone in the country’s history not only for the destruction, but also for the reconstruction. Under Trujillo’s direction, the reconstruction of the capital and other essential infrastructures was undertaken, with the aim of revitalizing the economy and improving the living conditions of citizens.
