International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers: A Tribute to the Guardians of Global Hope

Every May 29th, the world commemorates the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, a date proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2002, to pay tribute to all those men and women who have served and continue to serve in peacekeeping operations under the United Nations flag.

This day also honors the memory of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, defending peace in the most conflict-ridden areas of the planet. It is celebrated on this date in recognition of the beginning of the first UN peacekeeping mission: the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), established in 1948 in Palestine.

Peacekeeping operations are one of the fundamental pillars of the UN. These missions not only act as intermediaries in armed conflicts, but also participate in institution-building, protection of civilians, support for electoral processes, and promotion of the rule of law in fragile or transitional regions.

Currently, over 87,000 peacekeepers, from over 120 countries, are serving in missions deployed in regions such as Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Eastern Europe. This diversity reflects the collective commitment of the international community in the search for peaceful and sustainable solutions to conflicts.

Behind every mission, there is a story of dedication, sacrifice, and courage. Since 1948, more than 4,300 peacekeepers have lost their lives while carrying out their duties. Some have been victims of armed attacks, others have died from illnesses or accidents in contexts of extreme risk.

In this regard, the International Day of Peacekeepers is also a moment of reflection and gratitude towards those who have paid the ultimate price for the cause of peace.

2025 Theme: “Sustainable Peace, Shared Future

Every year, the UN selects a theme to highlight key aspects of the work of peacekeepers. In 2025, the theme is “Sustainable peace, shared future”, emphasizing the need to build lasting solutions that involve local communities, state actors, and international organizations.

The UN is increasingly investing in the training of women in peacekeeping forces, the integration of modern technologies to prevent conflicts, and post-conflict peacebuilding strategies that promote reconciliation, economic development, and institutional strengthening.

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is a call to continue working together for a world where peace is not an exception, but the norm.
