Santo Domingo.– President Luis Abinader assured this Friday that the competent authorities are investigating the death of Miguel Antonio Lucas, known as “Miguelito,” who passed away after having remained for several days in the custody of the National Police in the San Cristóbal province.
When asked by the press about the case, the president indicated that it is not appropriate to draw conclusions before the investigations are completed and reiterated that it will be the investigation that determines the circumstances of the death.
“It is being investigated and we must wait to see what the results of the investigation yield,” stated the head of state.
The case has sparked concern and demands for justice from Lucas’s relatives, who allege that the man was a victim of physical assault while he was being held at the 17th Company detachment of the National Police in San Cristóbal.
According to the version provided by his relatives, Miguel Antonio Lucas was arrested on July 8 for allegedly selling lottery numbers via an electronic device without authorization. They claim that during his detention he showed a notable deterioration in health and fever, which is why they requested on several occasions that he be transferred to a medical center, a request that, they assert, was not granted.

The relatives maintain that when he was finally handed over, his condition was critical, so he was rushed to the Juan Pablo Pina Regional Teaching Hospital, where he subsequently lost his life.
Demanding answers, family members, friends, and community residents held a march with the coffin to the San Cristóbal police station, demanding an impartial investigation and that those responsible be sanctioned if any irregular conduct is determined.

Meanwhile, the National Police spokesperson, Diego Pesqueira, reported that the institution is awaiting the results of the autopsy report to establish the cause of death and assured that investigations are continuing based on the evidence collected.
