Santo Domingo.– President Luis Abinader asserted that during his administration, significant progress has been made in strengthening the independence of the Judiciary, highlighting the autonomous role of the Public Prosecutor’s Office in the fight against corruption.
In an interview, Abinader highlighted that both former Attorney General Miriam Germán and the current magistrate Jennifer Niese have acted with “total independence,” and emphasized that in his six years of administration he has never intervened or proposed actions to said authorities.
“There is a totally independent Public Prosecutor’s Office that does not receive any kind of interference, nor do I ever propose any to it,” the president stated.
The president mentioned the creation of the Anti-Fraud Unit of the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, through which cases involving some 25 institutions and approximately one hundred people from the current government have been brought to justice.
Abinader also explained the operation of the Asset Recovery Team, which works in coordination with the Public Prosecutor’s Office to ensure that those convicted of corruption not only serve prison time, but also return the stolen resources to the State.
Faced with criticism from opposition sectors that speak of “political persecution,” the head of state flatly rejected them:
“Those accusations are always made, but internationally what we have been recognized for is the improvements in the independence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the justice system.”
He concluded that the independence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office and constitutional protection are essential tools to prevent caudillismo and effectively combat corruption in the country.
