Abinader inaugurates modern municipal market in Higüey

Higuey, La Altagracia. After more than 13 years of waiting, President Luis Abinader inaugurated this Monday the new Municipal Market of Higüey, a modern work that will benefit more than 200 vendors and will transform local commerce, dignifying the working conditions of hundreds of merchants in the province. The new market is the answer to a historical debt with merchants who for years worked in precarious conditions and with a city that demanded organized, hygienic, and safe spaces for the commercial exchange of basic products. Symbol of economic reactivation During his speech, the Minister of Public Works and Communications, Eduardo Estrella, highlighted that this work is part of the process of modernizing the urban and commercial development poles of the country. He stated that this market is not just a building, but a symbol of economic reactivation and a commitment to hygiene and formality, as the merchants will have a decent space to work and the citizens a safe and clean place to make their purchases.

"This is a great work whose cost was 335 million pesos. It has six modules and more than 200 parking spaces. I also want to inform you that all municipal districts will be paved and work is underway on the construction of the Circunvalación de la Otra Banda, in addition, three roads of about 20 kilometers will be delivered," said Estrella.

Mark the beginning of a new stage

Meanwhile, Mayor Karina Aristy stated that this work has great significance for the residents, as it marks the beginning of a new stage for the Higüeyans, characterized by development and progress. He also highlighted that the project will contribute to the strengthening of the local economy and expressed his gratitude to President Abinader for focusing on the people of Altagracia, "thus promoting a future of greater opportunities for the community."

Modernity and functionality

The modern infrastructure is composed of a total of 212 commercial premises, administrative areas and sanitary services. Six pavilions housing around 218 cubicles, strategically distributed according to the classification of the products to guarantee order and hygiene. The market will have a craft pavilion, one for meats and sausages, another for grains and canned goods, as well as three pavilions for items and vegetables. In addition, it will have two download areas and two parking lots with an approximate capacity for 142 vehicles and 73 motorcycles, which will facilitate the logistics and access of buyers and suppliers. Economic and Social Impact The work directly benefits more than 200 small and medium-sized merchants who previously worked in informal conditions or in obsolete facilities. With the market's launch, an increase in the area's commercial flow is expected, as well as the creation of new indirect jobs that will strengthen the economy of the head municipality of La Altagracia province. The municipal authorities present at the event thanked the central government for addressing a historic demand from the residents of Higuey, who for decades requested the total remodeling of this important supply center.
