Santo Domingo. The National District City Council (ADN) has opened the bidding process for the construction of the final stage of the Cultural and Sports Malecón project, an intervention valued at RD$588 million that will transform the western section of George Washington Avenue, between Gaviota Street and Gregorio Luperón Avenue.
The initiative seeks to recover nearly three kilometers of the capital’s coastline through the creation of new recreational, sports, commercial, and mobility spaces, in an area that for years has remained neglected compared to other sectors of the Malecón.
According to the budgetary certification issued by the city council, the project contemplates an investment of RD$117.6 million in 2026 and RD$470.4 million in 2027, in accordance with the financial schedule established for the execution of the work.
The planned works include the reconstruction of sidewalks and curbs, construction of pedestrian paths, bike lanes, ramps for people with disabilities, storm drainage, sanitary system, retaining walls, paving, road signage, and improvements to vehicular access points.
Likewise, the project includes the installation of a new lighting system with LED luminaires and solar lamps, as well as poles, wiring, and electrical interconnections, with the goal of improving safety and extending the use of the space during the night.

The proposal also includes a broad recreational component with children’s areas, outdoor gyms, sports courts, pet zones, mini-golf spaces, giant chess, domino tables, and areas intended for family gatherings.
Regarding the environmental aspect, landscaping work will be carried out with the planting of trees, grass, and ornamental plants, the expansion of green areas, and the installation of urban furniture to improve the image of the coastal corridor and strengthen urban biodiversity.
As part of the plan, commercial and gastronomic areas will also be enabled with booths, pergolas, sanitary facilities, and complementary installations, with the aim of boosting the economic activity of the area and turning the section into a new meeting point for residents and visitors.

The file also contemplates the construction and equipment of accessible public restrooms, pumping systems, cisterns, septic tanks, manholes, and other sanitary infrastructure to guarantee the integral functioning of the space.
The execution of the project will be carried out in two stages. During 2026, basic infrastructure, drainage, and earthworks will mainly be carried out, while in 2027, electrical works, landscaping, sports and recreational areas, commercial spaces, and final finishes will be completed.
The contracting process was approved on July 9th by the National District City Council’s Purchasing and Contracting Committee under the reference ADN-CCC-LPN-2026-0007, which also designated the technical team in charge of evaluating the proposals from the participating companies.
With this intervention, the city council seeks to complete the comprehensive recovery of the Santo Domingo Malecón, extending improvements to one of the least developed sections of the coastline and strengthening its potential as a space for recreation, mobility, tourism, and urban development.
