The initiative is part of the bank's social commitment
San Cristóbal. – Banco Popular Dominicano, in collaboration with the Friends Against Childhood Cancer Foundation (FACCI), delivered a new home to the family of young oncology patient Luis David Alcántara, a resident of the La Cueva community in the municipality of Yaguate, San Cristóbal province. The solidarity action was carried out as part of the support that Banco Popular has been providing for 14 years to FACCI, an organization dedicated to accompanying children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer and their families during the treatment and recovery process.A new home for Luis and his family
In 2021, at the age of 14, Luis Alcántara was diagnosed at the Dr. Robert Reid Cabral Children's Hospital with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a type of cancer in the lymphatic system. His mother had to leave her job to be able to care for the young teenager and his other three siblings. His maternal grandparents took care of helping them with food and gave them a space to live that, however, did not meet the appropriate living conditions. FACCI volunteers identified the socioeconomic and psychosocial situation of the family, the vulnerability of the home and belongings, and contacted Banco Popular to initiate an operation to improve the family's living conditions. You can also read: Banco Popular opens three new branches
With the support of Popular, a house was built from scratch on the land given by the maternal grandparents. The new family home has significantly improved the living conditions for the young patient, his mother and his siblings, thereby overcoming the structural and economic limitations that hindered their quality of life and the patient's recovery. In addition to the construction of the house, Banco Popular gave a laptop to the young beneficiary, with the purpose of contributing to his academic training and facilitating his access to technological tools that support his educational development. Comprehensive support for families During the handover of the new home, representatives of Popular highlighted that this initiative is part of the financial institution's sustainability and responsible banking strategy, aimed at generating a positive impact on communities, benefiting families facing situations of vulnerability. In this regard, Mr. Leonel Ng, manager of the Responsible Banking Division, stated that "by delivering this new home to Luis Alcántara and his family, we are not only delivering better physical facilities; we are creating a safer and more comfortable environment for those who reside here, ensuring that all family members live with dignity".
El Popular maintains a collaboration alliance with FACCI practically since the beginning of this non-profit organization, through annual contributions aimed at strengthening the foundation's programs, which are designed to address the needs of comprehensive medical treatment for children and adolescents with cancer, as well as to offer direct assistance to their families, including housing improvements and other aid that contributes to dignify their environment.
