Following her tour of Quintana Roo, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed her attendance at the closing match of the 2026 World Cup, Spain versus Argentina, at the New York New Jersey Stadium, which will take place next Sunday at 1:00 PM (Central Mexico time).

In a brief meeting with the media, the Mexican president shared that she received a direct invitation from the President of the United States, Donald Trump, noting that the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, will also attend.

We have already set aside the tickets,” said the Mexican president, assuring that she will provide more details about her attendance at the event tomorrow, July 18. She also added that her return could be scheduled for Monday.

After more than a month of matches in stadiums across Mexico, the United States, and Canada, those who will compete in the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the national teams of Spain and Argentina, after having emerged victorious in 7 matches, three in the Group Stage and four in the Knockout Stage.

Conditions for the meeting between Spain and Argentina are being evaluated

Conditions are being evaluated for the meeting between Spain and Argentina.

Authorities are maintaining constant monitoring of environmental conditions in the northeastern United States ahead of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina.

The main concern is the presence of smoke derived from wildfires in Canada, which has generated pollution alerts in at least 18 states, including New Jersey, the host of the match.

Air quality in areas near the stadium has exceeded 200 points on the Air Quality Index in recent days, a level considered very unhealthy, while the forecast for the weekend maintains uncertainty regarding the movement of smoke on the day of the match.

The smoke from nearly 900 active wildfires in Canada now covers more than 1,600 kilometers and is affecting areas of the United States from Michigan to Virginia.

While isolated rain and storms are expected in Ontario, the forecast does not anticipate enough precipitation to control the hotspots, and the wind could even aggravate the spread.

This situation complicates team planning: while Spain trains outdoors in New Jersey, Argentina remains in the Atlanta area, awaiting news on the evolution of air quality, which will define the final decision for the closing event.

  • Televisa (Channel 5)
  • TV Azteca (Azteca 7)

It should be noted that the broadcast will also be available on digital and streaming platforms.

Could the 2029 Club World Cup be played in Mexico?

Sheinbaum commented in recent days that the possibility of Mexico hosting the 2029 Club World Cup depends on there being favorable conditions for the country.

During the July 8th conference, the president pointed out that the priority is to ensure benefits for Mexico before making any decisions.

“We are going to look at the conditions, it must always be favorable conditions for Mexico,” affirmed the Mexican president. She reiterated that, although she considers the opportunity positive, the country should only move forward if an advantageous scenario is guaranteed. “We must always seek favorable conditions for Mexico. But it would be, I think, good for Mexico in general,” she added.
