Credit to SMEs increases by 8.5% in the last year

The portfolio reached RD$534,988 million as of March 2025.

Santo Domingo.- The gross credit portfolio allocated to micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) experienced a year-on-year growth of 8.5% at the end of March this year, reaching a balance of RD$534,988 million. This way, Dominican banks continue to support the development of this important segment of the local economy, according to data from the Report on financing to MSMEs in Dominican banks of the Superintendency of Banks (SB), published on the occasion of the National MSME Day, celebrated on June 27th.

The number of credits allocated to this segment increased by 13.6% during the last year, reaching 557,287 loans granted and an average balance per debtor of RD$959,899.

explica la SB en su publicación.
The report shows that the weighted average interest rate for SMEs reached 14.3% as of March 2025, above that recorded in the rest of the private commercial portfolio (10.4%).  Regarding delinquency, this showed a year-on-year increase of 0.7 percentage points, standing at 1.79% as of March 2025, in line with the current market situation. This value remains relatively low, compared to the historical trajectory of the indicator. The growth of credit to SMEs in foreign currency has behaved similarly to the portfolio in national currency and, as of March 2025, represented 28.7% of the total portfolio.
