New York. The Dominican Republic was chosen as the host for the next annual meeting of the United Nations CIFAL training centers, an activity that will bring together representatives from 34 countries to strengthen institutional planning and the exchange of experiences regarding sustainable development.
The formal invitation was extended by the president of the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), Víctor D’Aza, during his participation in the High-Level Forum on Sustainable Development, held in New York.
The country’s designation as host is a response to the formative work developed by the LMD, which allowed the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) to establish a CIFAL center in Dominican territory in 2024, under the management of the entity that advises local governments.
This center has a scope covering the Central America and the Caribbean region and is part of a network comprised of 34 CIFAL centers distributed across different continents, whose purpose is to strengthen human capacities, promote partnerships between cities, and facilitate the exchange of knowledge to address the challenges of sustainable development.
During the announcement, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNITAR, Michelle Gyles McDonough, highlighted the commitment of D’Aza and the Dominican Municipal League to the training programs promoted by the international organization.

McDonough also valued the initiative for the Dominican Republic to host the next annual meeting of the CIFAL network, scheduled for the end of this year, where representatives from different countries will share experiences and work strategies.
For his part, Víctor D’Aza expressed his satisfaction with the country’s selection as the host of the meeting and highlighted the importance of this space for strengthening cooperation and the exchange of knowledge among the participating nations.
