The national electrical system recorded a new all-time high for instantaneous peak demand this Thursday night, reaching 4,166.52 megawatts (MW) at 9:58 p.m., reported the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos.
The official highlighted that this new high reflects the sustained growth of electricity consumption in the country, driven by the dynamism of economic activity, the increase in household demand, and the high temperatures typical of the season.
The record, corresponding to 9:58 PM on this July 16, surpasses the previous mark and constitutes a new milestone for the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI), evidencing the need to continue strengthening generation, transmission, and distribution capacity to respond to the increase in consumption.
This new high comes less than a month after the country set another demand record, when on June 18 the SENI reached 4,077.34 MW, surpassing the 4,000-megawatt barrier for the first time.
Energy demand is expected to continue on an upward trend, due to the high temperatures during this time of the year.
Minister Joel Santos reiterated that the Government continues to execute strategic projects aimed at guaranteeing the country’s energy security and ensuring a reliable and efficient supply in the face of sustained growth in electricity demand.
