Santo Domingo.- The spokesperson for the Fuerza del Pueblo senate bloc, Eduard Alexis Espiritusanto Castillo, insisted this Wednesday that the entry into force of the new Penal Code should be postponed for six months, to allow for a comprehensive review of the articles that have been questioned by various sectors of society.
The legislator maintained that, although Congress announced it will modify several provisions before their implementation, the process should not be carried out in an accelerated manner, as there are still “inconsistencies” and even articles that, as he stated, could conflict with the Constitution.
“Why the rush? The Code is already approved. The right thing to do is to carefully analyze each observation with all sectors, because this will not be a code for one person, but for all Dominicans,” he expressed.
Espiritusanto assured that the legislative piece does not expire, which is why he understands there is sufficient time to hear the proposals from institutions and organizations that have requested changes before its enactment.

In that sense, he reiterated that the Fuerza del Pueblo proposes a period of six months to review the observations presented, correct the indicated aspects, and subsequently, put the new Penal Code into effect.
“We understand that the Code can wait. We request six months for it to be analyzed and then it can be enacted with all the corrections that society demands,” he concluded.
