Santiago.- The Hemato-Oncology Unit of the Dr. Arturo Grullón Regional University Pediatric Hospital celebrated its twentieth anniversary this Tuesday, highlighting the advances achieved in the care and treatment of childhood cancer in the Cibao region.
During the commemorative event, Dr. Luisa Collado, director of the unit, reported that in these 20 years, 1,247 surgical interventions have been performed on patients diagnosed with cancer, of which 531 managed to overcome the disease, a figure that represents significant progress in the fight against childhood cancer in the country.
Collado explained that the unit has offered thousands of consultations in different areas, including dermatology, oncological surgery, palliative care, mental health, and oncological surveillance, providing comprehensive care supported by a multidisciplinary team committed to the health and well-being of children and adolescents facing cancer diagnoses.
During the emotional event, several patients who overcame the disease shared their testimonies, including Robinson Stuven, from Moca; María Virgen, from Cabarete; and Stelin Martínez, from Puerto Plata, who expressed their gratitude to the medical staff and the Voluntariado Jesús con los Niños, an entity that has consistently supported the unit's work.
