Santiago.- In a moving scene of pain and consternation, family and friends said their final goodbyes this Thursday to Modesto Marmolejos del Rosario, 52 years old, buried in the municipal cemetery of Ingenio Arriba, after having been found dead in an irrigation canal in Valverde province, a few hours after his wife received a mysterious anonymous envelope with money to buy “the death box.”
The event has caused a great impact in the community of Cienfuegos, where the deceased resided with his wife, Yohanny Diloné. According to the woman, she received a sealed envelope containing her husband’s cell phone, ID card, and a sum of money accompanied by an anonymous message suggesting she prepare the funeral. Immediately, Diloné went to the National Police and the Prosecutor’s Office of Santiago to report what had happened.
Hours later, Marmolejos’ body was found tied at the feet, hands, and neck in an irrigation canal in the municipal district of Jicomé, Valverde province.
The man worked as a warehouse manager in a door-to-door shipping company, and had not shown up for work since last Saturday, October 4, the day he was reported missing.
During the burial, family members and friends called for justice and asked the authorities to clarify the crime, which has been classified as a violent and ruthless act.
The National Police reported that so far more than six people have been questioned in connection with the case, while investigations continue to determine the circumstances of the death and those responsible for the act.
