David Varela, a thirty-eight-year-old Navy reservist, was arrested in Hong Kong after being a fugitive for more than two months. He is accused of murdering his wife Lina Guerra and of hiding her body in a freezer at his home in Norfolk, Virginia.
The capture was confirmed by the director of the
FBI, Kash Patel, who detailed that the operation was the product of coordinated work with federal and international agencies, after a global capture alert was issued.
The investigation began when Guerra's family reported his
disappearance at the end of January 2026, having received no news since the 16th of that month. Norfolk police were the first to intervene and, upon detecting that Varela had left the country, requested the collaboration of the
Department of Homeland Security, the
NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) and the
FBI.
The
Virginia State Chief Medical Examiner's Office determined on February 10 that Lina Guerra was murdered, which prompted the activation of an international search protocol.
The autopsy established homicide as the cause of death and the authorities found the body in a freezer inside the house. Varela had taken an international flight days after the report.
The prosecution used migration records and WhatsApp data to locate him in Hong Kong during the escape. According to the
NCIS, the detainee had no prior connections with Hong Kong or China, although he did have family in Colombia—considered a possible alternative destination by the investigators.
Previous complaints and international activation
The impetus for the complaint and the provision of a history of domestic violence came from Lina Guerra's family. Paola Ramírez, the victim's sister-in-law, stated to the local channel WTKR that there were previous episodes of aggression and control by Varela: “David had already exerted violence before”.

serious charges, including first-degree murder, which may result in life imprisonment according to Virginia law.
