Interoceanic train derailment in Oaxaca, Mexico, leaves 13 dead and 98 injured

At least 13 people died and 98 were injured, 36 of them hospitalized, due to the derailment of the Transístmico train, part of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT), (southern Mexico), a megaproject that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through trains, ports and industrial poles, reported this Sunday the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar). Through a press release regarding the train accident on the Z line on the Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos route of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec railway in which 250 people were traveling, it was indicated that 139 are out of danger. The institution expressed its condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives in this accident and reaffirmed its commitment to address the situation with the utmost responsibility, transparency, and adherence to the law, providing immediate support to those affected by this event.

He added that during the search and location actions for the injured people, the institution deployed a total of 360 naval elements, 20 vehicles, four land ambulances, three air ambulances and a tactical drone. He indicated that the injured are in IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz, as well as IMSS-Bienestar hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec. "I have instructed the Secretary of the Navy and the Undersecretary for Human Rights of the Secretariat of the Interior to go to the site and personally assist the families; also the delegates of IMSS and IMSS-Bienestar."

She also highlighted that the Secretary of the Interior will coordinate the work and thanked the support of the governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara, and his team.
