Santo Domingo.– On July 16, 1838, the founding father Juan Pablo Duarte founded the secret society La Trinitaria, a patriotic organization created with the goal of preparing the way for national independence and the birth of the Dominican Republic.
The organization was established together with eight young people committed to the independence cause: Juan Isidro Pérez, Pedro Alejandro Pina, Jacinto de la Concha, Félix María Ruiz, José María Serra, Benito González, Felipe Alfau and Juan Nepomuceno Ravelo.
La Trinitaria operated clandestinely due to the control exerted by the Haitian authorities over the eastern part of the island. Its members swore to work for the freedom of the homeland and to keep the movement’s activities secret.

Through this organization, Duarte promoted the ideals of independence, sovereignty, and patriotism that led to the proclamation of the Dominican Republic on February 27, 1844.
