Limber Cruz highlights DR is among the top seven countries with the least hunger in Latin America

The Minister of Agriculture, Limber Cruz, revealed that according to data from five international organizations, the Dominican Republic continues its decline in the world ranking for hunger eradication during the period 2022-2024, placing the country in the 19th position among 26 Latin American nations with the lowest rates of undernourishment.

According to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report prepared by FAO, WFP, IFAD, WHO and UNICEF, which was published on July 28, it shows that in the Dominican Republic the prevalence of undernourishment (hunger) in the total population in the period 2022/24 was 3.6%, or about 400,000 people who suffer from it.

Previously, the country had 6.3% during the period 2020 to 2022, including about 700 thousand people who suffered or experienced hunger and extreme hunger.

Thanks to a government policy focused on productive sectors, improvements in infrastructure, greater productivity and investment, technology and innovation in the field, the Dominican Republic is currently only surpassed by six countries with lower rates than ours in undernourishment, said Minister Cruz.

After his recent visit to Ethiopia where he participated in the United Nations Summit on Food Systems, the minister stated that Uruguay, Guyana, Brazil, Costa Rica and Chile with 2.5% each; Mexico with 2.7% and Argentina with 3.4% surpass the 3.6% of the Dominican Republic in the prevalence of lower rates of undernourishment and hunger in Latin America.

“This 3.6% places the country above many nations worldwide, where the prevalence list between 2022 and 2024 exceeds 19.7% in African countries; 17.5% in the Caribbean subregion; 7.6 and 7.3% in Oceania and Asia, around 5.4 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 5% in Central America, 4.2% in South America; only the United States and some European Union countries are below 2% worldwide.”

“At the rate we are going in the Dominican Republic, I have faith that we will be able to achieve the Presidential Goal of Total Eradication of Hunger or Zero Hunger in the coming years, and before 2028, thanks to the fact that we produce over 90% of the foods in the basic and mass consumption basket,” said the head of Agriculture.
