The President of Argentina, Javier Milei, congratulated Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado this Friday for her "enormous fight for the brave defense of freedom and democracy", following her consecration as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
"María Corina Machado, my congratulations for this more than deserved recognition for your enormous fight for the brave defense of FREEDOM and democracy", Milei posted on his X social media account.
The Argentine leader said in that same publication that Machado is fighting against the "narco-dictatorship of Venezuela", referring to the government of Nicolás Maduro.
"Thank you for the inspiration with which you illuminate the world," Milei concluded his message.
In Buenos Aires, groups of Venezuelan activists residing in Argentina gathered this Friday to celebrate the distinction to Machado in front of the Venezuelan embassy, located in the Palermo neighborhood.
Mariangel Navas Centeno, a Venezuelan citizen who participated in the activity in front of the diplomatic headquarters, told EFE that the recognition implies "support for María Corina Machado's fight to rescue freedom and democracy in our country".
"María Corina represents the true peace that Venezuelans want, a truly free country without political prisoners or tortured people," added Navas Centeno.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to "a brave and committed defender of peace, a woman who keeps the flame of democracy alive in the midst of growing darkness," said Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, in the reading of the verdict.
The Venezuelan opposition leader has demonstrated that the tools of democracy are also those of peace, underlined the committee, which added that the award winner embodies the hope of a different future, in which the fundamental rights of citizens are protected and their voices are heard.
As a leader of the democratic movement in Venezuela, Machado is one of the most extraordinary examples of civil courage in Latin America in recent times, the committee highlighted.
