Amidst PlayStation’s decision to end physical game production by 2028, the conditions users must meet to avoid losing their accounts went viral, considering that Sony could delete them along with all purchased digital games.

The most notable point of the review of the accepted terms and conditions is that it is not enough to take care of account security or respect the code of conduct to keep purchased games, but that not logging in for a certain period could cause the account to disappear.

The conditions for PlayStation to delete an account and all digital games

According to the PlayStation Network (PSN) Terms and Conditions, every user is required to sign in at least once every 36 months (three years). If an account remains inactive for that period, the Japanese company is authorized to delete the profile and all digital content associated with it: from PS3, PS4, and PS5 games, to any other digital product purchased.

Sony must send an email before deleting a PlayStation account and grants an extra six months to avoid deletion.

This provision is detailed in article 21.1 of the legal document, which specifies the possibility of an irreversible closure after three years of inactivity. The process, however, contemplates prior notification: Sony will send an email to the address associated with the account to warn about the imminent deletion. After that notice, the user will have an additional period of six months to log in and avoid definitive closure.

This means that, in practice, a user can lose their entire PlayStation digital library if they do not access their account for a total period of 42 months (36 months of inactivity plus six months after notification).

The closure implies the total loss of access to online services and digital products, and the process is irreversible according to the company’s own legal text.

Deleting your PlayStation account implies the total loss of access to online services and purchased digital products.

The risk of losing a PlayStation account and all purchased digital games arises if the user remains inactive for 36 consecutive months. Sony notifies via email before proceeding, granting an extra six months to log in and thus avoid permanent deletion.

If the user does not take any action within that period, the account and its purchases will disappear forever. This condition has become especially relevant given the imminent disappearance of physical games, as in the future all digital ownership will depend on the active account.

What are the limits of this PlayStation account deletion

Not all PlayStation users are subject to this clause in the same way. The updated text of the terms and conditions in April 2026 confirms that the rule has existed since version 10 of the document, implemented in December 2019

PlayStation’s rule regarding inactive accounts applies in the United Kingdom and several European countries, but it does not apply in the United States and Mexico.

Previously, in the October 2017 version, the inactivity period was only 24 months, but it was subsequently extended to 36 months and it was clarified that the rule only applies where local legislation permits it.

This means that, although the rule is in effect in the United Kingdom and several European countries, it does not apply in the United States, Mexico, and other territories where consumer protection laws or local specificities exclude these types of automatic closures. However, the possibility of the company expanding the policy to new regions worries the international community.

The discovery of this clause by the community was motivated by the debate generated by the end of disc-based games. Many players, who previously overlooked legal terms, have begun to review official documents and question the long-term security of their digital purchases.
