In statements offered on the program Alofoke Radio Show, Polonia expressed his surprise at the way he was dismissed and regretted that, despite his career and contributions to the club, he did not receive a call from the team president to thank him for his years of service. The former coach explained that the arrival of a new management was presented as a stage of changes and renewal within the organization, but pointed out that, in the end, the only change made was his departure.“Normally I never thought something like this could happen, knowing my trajectory, what I contribute to the team, what I contribute with the Eagles and with the guys. For me it was a shock”, he expressed visibly affected.
Asked if he considers what happened a betrayal, Poland was clear in questioning the lack of leadership of the team's presidency:"They said they wanted new things, a different environment, that they were going to make changes to coaches, trainers... but in the end, the only change that was made was that of Luis Polonia," he maintained.
Poland also explained that, upon learning that Guzmán has ties to the organization of the Chicago Cubs, he came to think that the contact would have to do with the signing of young talents or some special project, never with his disassociation from the Cibaeño team. The former player, a symbol of dedication and passion for the Eagles, stated that his departure was especially painful due to the time and effort dedicated to the franchise."What I don't understand is how the team's presidency lets itself be governed by a management. The president never called me, not even to thank me for the years I was there. Who called me was Jean Guzmán," he pointed out.
Despite the bad moment, Poland assured that they hold no grudges and wished success to the team and the new management, although they reminded them of the weight of the responsibility they now carry before a fan base tired of losing.“That hurts because I spent a lifetime there, 40-something years. I understand that no one is eternal, but I never thought of it that way. If you say you're going to make a change in the coaching staff, but the only change is me, that hurts,” he expressed with a tone of resignation.
“I am not blaming anyone, but if you brought in a new management because they have what it takes to win, then this year the Eagles cannot fail. The fan is tired,” he emphasized.
