La Altagracia. – The event that occurred in the community of La Ceiba, municipal district of Verón, continues to leave mourning. This Tuesday, Lacey Padua Marte, a 17-year-old adolescent, died at the General and Specialties Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Altagracia , who was injured in the accident recorded on Saturday night.
With his death, there are now seven fatalities from the accident, considered a shocking event in the province so far this year.
The event occurred when the driver of a garbage truck hit a van carrying around 20 Christians returning from a religious activity, as well as two young people traveling on a motorcycle.
Concern about traffic accidents
This accident adds to the long list of tragedies that every year sadden Dominican families. According to international organizations, the Dominican Republic is among the countries with the highest rate of traffic accident deaths in the region, with an average of more than 30 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
Factors such as speeding, reckless driving, lack of signage, and inadequate road conditions are among the main causes of high road accident rates.
