The U.S. government seeks to expand to more than thirty the countries subject to its travel ban

Washington.- It plans to expand to more than 30 the number of countries subject to its travel ban, according to the announcement made this Thursday by the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem. During a television interview with Fox News, Noem avoided confirming whether the new figure would reach 32 countries or the names of all the nations, but she pointed out that President Donald Trump continues to evaluate "which nations to include for security reasons." The government has maintained a proclamation since June that prohibits the entry of citizens from 12 nations and restricts that of another seven, with the argument of preventing the entry of "foreign terrorists" and other threats.

The measures affect both immigrants and temporary visitors, including tourists, students, and business travelers.

Reasons for the prohibitions

Noem did not specify which countries could be added to the list, but justified the expansion due to the lack of stable governments capable of providing reliable information about their citizens. During the last week, various U.S. media outlets reported that the Trump Administration is considering banning the entry of citizens from up to 36 additional countries, according to anonymous internal sources from the State Department. The prohibition actions would be based on the armed attack against two members of the National Guard last Wednesday in the U.S. capital. The attack keeps the suspect at the center, who is an Afghan citizen who arrived in the United States in 2021 under a resettlement program that, according to the Trump Administration, lacked sufficient controls. Following the aggression, the leader promised to "permanently" suspend migration from "third world countries," without specifying which ones. Since taking office in January, Trump has strongly pushed for the enforcement of immigration law, sending federal agents to large cities run by Democrats and toughening the treatment of asylum seekers at the border with Mexico.
